History:

The San Antonio River Walk in Texas is a network of pathways that follows the San Antonio River as it meanders through downtown San Antonio. The River Walk evolved over the course of the 20th century from a drainage canal originally designed to contain and control floods in the area. The first public walkways were added in 1939 and in 1941 the San Antonio River Authority organized a competition to design a landscaped esplanade which was completed in 1942. The original design was implemented only property by property and did not extend into the surrounding neighborhoods. In 1968, the federal government approved plans for an expanded system of pathways and commercial development, which was completed in 1971. In the following decade, the the River Walk was transformed with the additions of a boat service and a landscape of flowering trees, shrubs, bridges and public art. In 2013, a major expansion broke ground that enhanced the existing River Walk and added the Museum Reach extension. Today, the San Antonio River Walk remains an important highlight of the city with more than 6 million visitors annually. The River Walk is lined with shops, restaurants, and attractions, including the historic Rainforest Cafe, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the San Antonio Zoo, the Shops of River Street and the historical La Villita district. The river’s deepest section is below the navigation lock at the center of the walkway and the brackish blend of saltwater and freshwater close to the mouth of the river serves as home to large sea life. The rich history, diverse culture, and natural resources of the River Walk have secured its spot in San Antonio’s history as a distinctive urban oasis.
