The earliest chapter of the story of the Getty Villa California in the USA began in 1974 when oil tycoon J. Paul Getty opened the Getty Villa as a museum to house his growing collection of antiquities. Nestled off the Pacific Coast Highway in the beautiful Pacific Palisades, the Villa gave Los Angeles and the surrounding area a glimpse into the classical world of ancient Greece and Rome. The Villa’s structure mimics that of a Roman country house and was designed to house the collection of antiquities amassed by J. The museum was originally open to the public from 1974-1997.
