History:

The National Zoo in Washington, D.C. was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest national parks in the United States. It is home to more than 1,500 animals of nearly 400 different species. It is also a research facility with the Smithsonian Institution, a Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Species (CRES), and a Foundation for the Conservation and Protection of Wild Animals and Plants. The National Zoo's history largely dates back to 1870 when an act of Congress established the Smithsonian Institution and directed the federal government to create a zoological garden to be a part of the Smithsonian. At the time, the National Zoo was housed in the Smithsonian's old shed, located near the Washington Monument. In 1889 Congress passed a new act that created a National Zoological Park on a 66-acre tract of government land near what is now downtown Washington, D.C. Under the leadership of William T. Hornaday, Chief of the new National Zoological Park, the National Zoo's historic 164-acre site was eventually created. Since the National Zoo opened in 1889, it has grown to be one of the nation's premier zoological parks. Today there are over 170 acres which are home to a variety of animal species. Visitors to the National Zoo can take guided walking tours, observe daily animal feedings and enrichment activities, and learn about the vast array of conservation programs offered in collaboration with the Smithsonian Institution, the Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Species (CRES), and the Foundation for Wildlife Conservation and Protection.
