History:

Mount Vernon is an historic estate in Fairfax County, Virginia. It was George Washington’s home from the early 1750s until his death in 1799. George Washington’s great-grandfather, Lawrence Washington, acquired the initial land for Mount Vernon in 1674. The estate was then passed down through generations of the family. In 1738, it was inherited by Lawrence’s grandson, George Washington, who was just sixteen at the time. Over the next four-and-a-half decades, Washington greatly expanded the grounds, houses, farms and outbuildings, making it one of the finest estates in Virginia. He incorporated features from different architectural periods, varying from English country manors to Georgian-style dwellings. Washington was a successful business manager and plantation owner, using his properties for agricultural and commercial pursuits. He added slave cabins, spinning houses, weaving looms, storehouses and other commercial structures. A fishing village was built along the Potomac, with a ferryboat dock and a fish market. He also created a gristmill, water-powered sawmill, blacksmith shop, and other trades on the property. These improvements allowed Washington to turn his properties into self-sufficient communities. He cultivated crops, maintained livestock, trained apprentices, and produced everything from clothing, furniture, and food to horse and carriage parts. Washington was very proud of Mt. Vernon, citing that it “placed [him] in a position of power and influence” and “confirm[ed] [his] standing as a man of substance and high social standing”. After his death, Mt. Vernon was passed onto his nephew, Bushrod Washington, who renovated the mansion with his wife, Ann. The Washingtons eventually left Mt. Vernon in 1859 and the estate passed through numerous owners. In 1858, Ann Pamela Cunningham founded the Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association, a group dedicated to preserving George Washington’s legacy at Mount Vernon. In 1960, the estate was designated a National Historic Landmark and in 1974 it was designated a National Historic Site. Today, the property is open for tours of its grounds, gardens, and house exhibits. It remains one of the most respected and well-preserved presidential homes in the United States.
