Museum Island in Halle (Saale) is located in the Merchant Quarter, just outside the centre of the historic city of Halle (Saale), Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. It is home to five of Germany’s most important museums covering a wide range of topics, from art, archaeology and history to natural sciences, folk culture and technology. The museums on Museum Island have been around since 1755, when the University of Halle opened the University and Regional Museum. This was later followed by the Museum of Natural History (1797) and the State Museum of Prehistory (1809). The fourth museum to be established on the island was the State Museum for Art and Technology in 1865. The most recent addition to the island is the Sammlung von Altertumswissenschaft (Collection of Antiquities, 1895). This is the oldest museum in Halle and the only one on the island with an overview of world culture.
