History:

The Wieskirche is a rococo style of church located in the Bavarian village of Steingaden, Germany. It was built in the 18th century and consecrated in 1754. It was built to house a wooden figure of Christ, known as the Scourged Savior, that was said to have miraculous healing powers. This figure was discovered in 1738. After fighting to have the figure recognized as a miracle, it was enshrined in the church, which was subsequently built in 1745. The building was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. It is known for its intricate rococo interior decorations, featuring marble, stucco, and frescoes done by artist Johann Baptist Zimmermann. It is considered a masterpiece of Bavarian Rococo architecture and is a popular tourist attraction. The church also houses several important works of art, including paintings by the Dutch painters Jan Steen, Jan van Huysum, and Carel van Mander. These paintings are from the 17th and 18th centuries.
