Mount Nemrut is an ancient archaeological site located in Adiyaman province of southeastern Turkey. It is the site of a 2nd century BC tomb-sanctuary of the Hellenistic kings of the ancient kingdom of Commagene. Located nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, it is one of the most famous historical sites in Turkey. The earliest records of Mount Nemrut show that it was a site of a royal burial as far back as the 3rd century BC. The Persian king Antiochus I Theos of the Seleucid dynasty built a tumulus and sanctuary on the site in the late 2nd century BC, along with a funerary cult. The tomb was likely used as a site of sacrificial offerings and other ceremonies for the dead king to ensure a favorable afterlife. Throughout the centuries, Mount Nemrut underwent various transformations, both due to natural erosion and to human intervention. In 73 AD, King Mithridates II of Commagene added a unique terrace to the site which contained a number of large statues of gods as well as the king's own image. In the 12th century AD, the Seljuk Turks built a tower and a mosque on the site. This era also saw the construction of an observation tower, along with a pulpit and a suit of armor for an unknown regional leader.
