History:

Amasra Castle is an ancient castle located in the town of Bartın in northern Turkey. It is thought to have been built during the Hellenistic period, though no records exist to prove its exact date of construction. The castle was used as a fortress and trading post during the Byzantines period, when it became a important post in the Black Sea trade route. In 1254, the castle fell to the Mongols, who used it until their defeat in the Battle of Köse Dağ in 1402. The castle came under Ottoman control in the 15th century, and was further fortified by them with the addition of two watchtowers and a defensive wall. During the Ottoman period, Amasra Castle was used to defend the town from pirates and other attackers. In 1848, the castle was damaged during a military campaign and it wasn't until the late 19th century that it was restored to its previous condition. The fortress was declared a National Historic Site of Turkey in 1987 and was restored yet again in 1996.
