History:
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, was a monumental tomb built by the Greek rulers of Caria, in present-day Turkey, for the Persian ruler Mausolus, who ruled over the Carian region between 377 and 353 BC. The mausoleum was designed by the Greeks, who had occupied Halicarnassus since the time of Alexander the Great. The actual construction began around 354 BC and took around six years to complete. The exterior structure of the mausoleum was made up of four stepped pyramids and was adorned with a four-horse chariot group on top that was made of marble. Its decoration was notably intricate and almost 2,500 square meters in size. The inside of the tomb housed two large underground compartments and four upper-level galleries. The tomb became part of the city landscape until AD 1494, when it was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake. However, its remains were well-preserved due to their solid construction. Archaeological findings began in earnest in the 19th century, and the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Today, the remaining parts of the mausoleum are a popular tourist attraction, drawing many visitors from around the world. The surrounding landscape is also well-preserved, with some classic ancient Greek buildings like the Temple of Aphrodite still standing.
