The Galleria Al Maryah Island is located on the east side of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. It is the most recent of many developments and is currently the largest shopping mall in Abu Dhabi. The mall opened in 2013 as part of the overall Al Maryah Island development. The Al Maryah Island development was started in 2010 by Mubadala, the Abu Dhabi-based firm. The goal was to create a financial district on the island complete with shops, residential, and office space. This was part of a larger effort to turn Abu Dhabi into a financial center. The mall's design was created by Foster + Partners, the same firm that also designed the Burj Khalifa and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Construction started in 2012 and was completed within a year. The Galleria Al Maryah Island boasts more than 350 high-end retail outlets. The mall also features a multi-screen movie theater, an ice rink, a variety of restaurants, and an IMAX theater.
