History:
Teone Church was built in 1885 by a Primitive Methodist Mission and is the oldest church in Tuvalu. The church was the first to bring Christianity to the island and was inaugurated on October 6, 1885 by Reverend Josiah Thomas Huggins who named it after the British Methodist preacher and conservationist, William Ewart Gladstone. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Tuvalu.

Teone Church is the oldest standing church in Tuvalu and has a congregation of around 800. It is the only church in Tuvalu with a traditional wooden structure and has a vaulted roof. In 1985, the church was damaged by Cyclone Keli, but repairs were soon made in order to preserve its historical importance.
