The Monument to the Constitution of Turkmenistan, or the Monumento ala Constitucíon de Turkmenistan was commissioned in 2003 by the then-President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of Turkmenistan in 1992. The project was completed in 2006 and it is located in the centre of Ashgabat near the Yayla Palace, close to the Ministry of Justice. The monument is 115 meters high and is built on top of a cube-like base which is adorned with 16 marble columns, representing the 16 articles found in the1992 Constitution of Turkmenistan. The base is topped with four gold-plated columns representing the Four Pillars of civilization: Health, Prosperity, Knowledge and Happiness. The four pillars are viewed as a metaphor for each of the pillars of Turkmen society, and serve as a reminder of the nation’s commitment to upholding the constitution. The monument is covered in gold leaf and decorated with a variety of Turkmen symbols, such as six stars, representing the six provinces of the country, and two horses, representing the horse-centered culture of the Turkmen people. At the top of the monument is a large rayed star with a crescent moon in the center, symbolizing the two main religions of Turkmenistan: Islam and Christianity.
