History:

Ruhyyet Palace is a historic residence in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan which was built in the late 19th century. It was originally built in 1884 by the Russian architect N. P. Fedorov as the residence of the Russian Governor of the Transcaspian Oblast. After the Russian Empire lost control of the city following the October Revolution, the palace became the residence of the Khans of the Bukhara Emirate and later, the residence of the Presidency of Turkmenistan. In 1930 the palace was remodeled as a palace of the People’s Commissariat of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan. During this time, the residence underwent significant changes, with the addition of the Chary palace, the White palace, and several other buildings, including a theater and dining hall. During the 1950s, the palace was used as a sanatorium for government officials and their families. In the 1960s, the palace was given to the Turkmen SSR government, and it became, among other uses, the residence of the Premier of the Turkmen SSR. During Soviet rule, the palace served many important social and political functions. In 1991, after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the palace was transferred to the government of independent Turkmenistan, and it is now the official residence of the President of Turkmenistan. The palace complex is located on a lush park-like area, and it contains a number of sculptures, fountains, and bridges in addition to the palace itself. The palace complex is also home to a functioning mosque, and the Ashgabat Zoo is located nearby. The palace complex has not undergone any significant alterations since its construction, and thus it has managed to retain its distinct charm and historic significance.
