The Monument of Independence in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, was constructed in 1998 to commemorate the independence of Turkmenistan following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The monument consists of three official parts: the flagpole, a white marble triumphal arch, and a 50-meter tall column. The flagpole is 92 meters tall and is gold in color. It is made out of metal, and is decorated with eight bronze strips and a golden star at the top symbolizing the eight provinces of Turkmenistan. The flagpole holds the national flag of Turkmenistan which stands as a symbol of the nation's independence. The triumphal arch stands at 18 meters tall and 11 meters wide, made out of polished white marble. Two giant bronze wings stretch across the arch, and a pair of bronze horses draw a chariot into the monument, followed by a procession of Turkmen horsemen and riders. A golden circle rests at the highest peak of the triumphal arch, representing the sun and the Turkmen national symbol of independence. The base of the monument is composed of a 24-meter high cylinder-shaped column, which is decorated with eight stars that symbolize the eight provinces of Turkmenistan.
