The museum, which first opened in 1925, is considered the oldest ethnographic museum in the country. The museum was originally established as a local history museum and named the "Museum of Local History." Over the following decades, the museum grew to include artifacts from other Central Asian regions, eventually transforming into the Balkanabat Ethnographic Museum. The museum features over 30,000 artifacts that help visitors to explore the culture, history, arts, and nature of the Turkmen people of the Balkanabat region.
