History:

Wat Mongkhon Bophit, otherwise known as Wat Phra Si Sanphet, is an active Theravada Buddhism temple located in the ancient capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya. The temple is said to have been built in the mid-15th century by King Boromaraja I, and then further developed during the reign of his son King Boromaraja II in 1499. The temple was originally an important residence for royalty, and was commonly referred to as the Royal Palace Temple. It also contained sacred relics such as a gold plaque inlaid with crystal, believed to possess great power and protection. These relics were later transferred to Wat Phra Si Sanphet II. In 1767, during the period of civil war that marked the decline of Ayutthaya, the city was destroyed. The temple was left in ruin and the bronze Buddha image was melted down into cannons for the invading Burmese. Fortunately, King Mongkut of Rattanakosin restored the image and had it re-casted. The image, known as Phra Mongkhon Bophit, lies in the central court of the temple and is one of the most iconic Buddhist images in Thailand. The temple was further renovated by King Rama V in the late 19th century. Today, the temple is a popular tourist attraction and pilgrimage site in Ayutthaya.
