Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, or "The Monastery of the Supreme Abode of the Great Lord" is a Buddhist temple located in Bangkok, Thailand. It was first established in 1829 by King Rama III under the orders of his elder brother, King Bowon (1809-1824). The temple served as a monastery for eighty-five Lord Buddhas, or "Brahmins", and was named after the King. The original temple complex was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767 during their invasion and subsequent occupation of Siam (now Thailand). It was eventually rebuilt in the early 19th century and significantly expanded upon. Today the temple complex covers approximately 18,000 m², with four main zones including a sacred bell tower, a library, a museum, and the main temple area. Inside the temple one can find a massive marble Buddha statue, the centerpiece of the complex. Other important sites include the monastery shrine room, the Law Court, and the Reclining Buddha chapel.
