History:
The Wat Benchamabophit – Bangkok is one of the most important and well-known Buddhist temples in Thailand. It is located in the Dusit district of Bangkok, near the Grand Palace. The temple was built during the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) of the Chakri Dynasty from 1897- 1901. The temple was initially called Wat Chaeng by the king himself. The temple is a temple complex made up of a Main Prang (prang are spired structures found in temples) and ubosot (ordination hall) that are surrounded by four chedis (stupas). Inside the ubosot is a beautiful image of the Buddha made from marble. There is also a large collection of Buddha’s relics. The ubosot is said to contain a fragment of the Emerald Buddha, which is the palladium of Thai Buddhism. This temple is known for its beautiful Italian marble and intricate designs. The design of the temple was intended to resemble the style of the famous European cathedrals. It is equipped with marble floors, doors, and pillars, as well as, decorations of gold and bronze.
