The mountain and surrounding area are known for being the historical birthplace of the Lanna Kingdom (1296-1558) as well as the early location of the Burmese-Lanna Thai civilization. In 1386, King Saen Muang Ma of Lavo founded Doi Suthep as a new political center and established Wat Doi Suthep, a royal temple of the Lanna Kingdom. In 1545, King Phra Keaw of the Lanna Kingdom ordered the construction of the golden pagoda atop the mountain, which became a very important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. This first temple was eventually destroyed by a fire in 1797, and the existing temple was built in its place by King Kawila of Chiang Mai in 1829. Today, Wat Doi Suthep is a very important religious site in Thailand. Thousands of pilgrims visit every year to pray for good luck and make merit.
