The Mangalambika Sametha Chandramouleeswarar Temple is one of the oldest and most important Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu. The main Puja rituals associated with this temple are the Maha Abhishekams and the Sahasra Linga Abhishekam. During the Maha Abhishekam (also known as the Panchamrutha Abhishekam), a special mix of five items – milk, curds, honey, lime juice and ghee – is offered to the deities. During the Sahasra Linga Abhishekam, thousands of clay molds of Shiva Lingams are prepared and placed in front of the temple shrine. As part of the ritual, they are then offered mixed rice (panchamirtham) and the chanting of Vedic mantras. The main festivals celebrated by the temple include Maha Shivaratri, Aadi Pooram, Navraatrir and Aaadanderam.
