Worship Method:

The worship method of Kamakshi Amman Temple is a combination of both the Tamil Vedic and Agamic traditions. It is one of the few temples in India which follows both these methods of worship. The temple follows the religious practices of Tamil Saivism and follows the Smarta tradition of worship. The daily pooja timings start at 3:30 AM and go up to 10:00 PM which is quite a long duration. During the morning pooja, the main deity is adorned with fresh flowers. The priests offer a variety of offerings such as oil lamps, flowers, fruits, incense sticks etc. After that, the Mangalasasanam is performed which includes singing of traditional mantras from the Vedas. After that, the priests offer Naivedyam (food offerings) to the deity. In the evening, the pooja begins with the priests doing a special prayer called the Deva Pooja. After the offering of Bilva leaves and flowers, the Lord is decorated with many ornaments and flowers. Later, the Aarti, which is also known as Deepaaradhana, is performed. The last pooja conducted is the Sheeveli Pooja, which again consists of traditional mantras and offering of fruits, flowers and lamps. This is followed by the Mangalasasanam and the offering of Naivedyam. The Kamakshi Amman Temple also has a weekly pooja called the Gauri Pooja, which is conducted on Monday or Tuesday nights. This pooja is dedicated to Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. During the Gauri Pooja, devotees offer flowers, camphor, turmeric paste, fruits, coconuts, and vermilion as offerings. An abhishekam is also done on Lord Shiva’s Lingam with water and milk. During this pooja, devotees are allowed to offer prayers to the Goddess and seek Her blessings.
