Valère Basilica In Switzerland: History,Facts, & Services
Valère Basilica is one of the oldest churches in Switzerland. It is located at The Avenue des Sous-Ponts 12 in Sion, Valais and it was built between 1070 and 1170. The church's origin is attributed to Bishop Arnold of Sion and is dedicated to Saint-Valère, who was martyred in 303. The basilica was damaged by fire in 1617 and renovated by Swiss architect Rinaldo Cuneo in 1925. The church features a mixture of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles. It has a nave, two aisles, a transept and a basilica choir. The church has a square bell tower and a semi-circular apse. The church also houses the tomb of Saint-Valère and the crypt containing the relics of the martyr. Inside the basilica one can find several paintings from the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as the Cuneo Organ built in 1930. Valère Basilica is open to visitors from Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Services are held on Sundays at 8.30am and 10am, as well as on weekdays at 6pm.
