Röm. Kath. Landeskirche NW In Switzerland is the Roman Catholic Church of the Canton of Zurich, a canton in northwest Switzerland. The Catholic Church of this canton is unique due to its agreement with the Swiss Confederation. The Church of Zurich was not abolished when Switzerland formed its own government in 1848, and it remains the only canton in Switzerland with a large Catholic presence. The Church of Zurich has its own clerical hierarchy and its own dioceses, or districts, led by bishops. It also has its own parish system and its own administrative infrastructure, and provides pastoral care, catechesis, and religious education to its members as well as to other Christians. The Church also takes part in social, cultural, and political activities.
