History:

The origins of Mariahilfkirche can be traced back to the year 1444, when it is said that a small chapel was built on the same site by two traveling traders. Eventually, it became the parish church of St. Gallen and was rebuilt after being destroyed in a fire in 1636. The construction of the new church, now known as Mariahilfkirche, began in 1643 and was completed in 1720. The church was significantly restored in 1840. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Switzerland.

Mariahilfkirche is a three-aisled building with a dome, which is based upon designs by the renowned Baroque architect Johannes Schoch. Inside the church, the dome is covered with frescoes by Joseph von Führich and Daniel Preisler, two of the most acclaimed painters of their time. As well as the frescoes, the church also contains a unique and well-preserved Pieta sculpture from the early 1600s.
