The original settlement of St. Martin dates back to the 13th century when it was a settlement attached to the St. Martins Abbey of Disentis. St. Martin In Switzerland was named after a Saint from the early days of Christianity, the apostle St. Martin of Tours. The area around St. Martin was part of the Abbey of Disentis from its founding in 1024 until 1798 when it was occupied by French Revolutionary troops. During the Napoleonic period, the area of St. Martin passed to the canton of Valais and remains part of it today. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Switzerland.
