San Giovanni Battista (Mogno) is a small municipality situated in the Italian-speaking canton of Valtellina, in the southern part of Switzerland. It is located at 946 meters above sea level in a glacial landscape with breathtaking views of the valley and the surrounding peaks. Its population consists mainly of Italian descendents from the nearby mountain valleys of Valtellina and Val Chiavenna and it is the smallest municipality in Switzerland. History The history of San Giovanni Battista dates back to the 13th century, when the Badia di San Gaudenzio was established on the slopes of the Cima Palva by the Cistercian order. It was a renowned monastic complex that included six abbeys and an important pilgrimage site where numerous religious relics were kept. The church was abandoned in the 19th century, when the population of the valley started to decrease. In the 19th century, after the Badia was abandoned, the municipality at Mogno was established in 1861 and it was soon populated by Italian immigrants from Valtellina, Val Chiavenna, and other mountain valleys of the Swiss Alps. In 1947, the municipality adopted its current name of San Giovanni Battista to honor the patron saint of the parish.
