The Church of the Nazarene in Suriname began in 1962 when Wiebe A. Prins, a missionary with the Dutch Reformed Church, founded a church in Boven Saramacca. Sonja and Bertha Lont, two Dutch Reformed Church members, heard Reverend Prins preach and were baptized on July 26th, 1962. This marked the beginning of the Church of the Nazarene in Suriname. In 1965 Lily and Jan van Mamrah, a Dutch couple, joined the mission field and assumed responsibility for the growing church. During their time with the mission, more churches were founded and the mission was established as an official district of the Church of the Nazarene in 1964. Today, the Church of the Nazarene in Suriname is a vibrant and strong church with 120 congregations and more than 4,000 members. The church runs school and radio programs and is actively involved in social and humanitarian work in the region.
