The temple is believed to have been built during the Chola dynasty, in the 12th century by two brothers named Waramalai and Manoharan, who were Pandyan princes from Madurai in Tamil Nadu. It was subsequently destroyed, as well as the nearby Kovilkudimunai Hindu temple, by the invading Portuguese and Dutch powers in the 16th or 17th centuries. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is believed to be the 1000th temple dedicated to the deity in the country. Lord Shiva is the presiding deity and is worshiped here as Athisatyanathar (Lord of the Eight Directions). The worship method of the Athiparameswara Amman Temple in Kondavil, Sri Lanka generally follows the South Indian or Tamil tradition. Devotees to the temple usually begin their worship with a prayer known as the ‘Suprabhatham’ and then perform a ‘pooja’ (ritual) in the temple. Athiparameswara Amman Temple, Kondavil is located in the Jaffna district in the Northern province of Sri Lanka. The easiest way to reach the temple from Colombo is to take the bus or a train from Colombo Fort to Jaffna town which takes about 8-10 hours. From Jaffna town, take a bus from the bus stand to Kondavil which is roughly 8km away and takes about 35 - 40 minutes. It is around 5 km away from Chunnakam Town. The temple is located in the main Road from Chunnakam to Kondavil bus stand.
