It was first built between 1618 and 1630, and is believed to have been built as a pilgrimage site to honor the Virgin Mary. It is a popular pilgrimage site and is known for its baroque architecture. History:

According to legend, there was a mule driver who made a pilgrimage to the Baños de Montemayor. One day, while on his way back, he heard a voice in the sky. The voice told him that he should stay in this place and wait for the Virgin Mary to appear. After some time, the Virgin Mary appeared to the mule driver and said that she wanted the sanctuary dedicated to her image. Thus, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sonsoles was born. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Spain.
