Sanctuary of Covadonga is a Centuries-old Christian pilgrimage site and one of the three major centers of Marian devotion in the Catholic tradition. Located in the foothills of the Picos de Europa mountain range, in the northern Spanish region of Asturias, the site is the traditional place of origin for the Reconquista, the Christian victory over Moorish forces in 722 and the beginning of the Christian state of Asturias. It is one of the best churches in Spain which you must visit.

History:

The Sanctuary likely dates back to the 8th century, shortly after the region of Asturias was liberated by Pelayo, a Visigoth, in 722 AD. Legend has it that Pelayo and his troops initially hid in a cave in the mountain later called Covadonga, where they were miraculously reunited with a beautiful wooden statue of the Virgin Mary. After they were victorious, they decided to dedicate the cave and its surroundings to the Virgin, thus founding the Sanctuary. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Spain.

The main structure of the Sanctuary was built between the 16th and 18th centuries, in Baroque and Neoclassical styles. Inside are an elliptical Plaza Mayor, an open gallery with a bell tower, the basilicas, several chapels and the Holy Cave with a statue of the Virgin Mary inside. Beautiful gardens and outdoor sculptures decorate the area outside.
