San Jerónimo el Real is a small town located in the province of Segovia, in the Castilla y León region of Spain. The town is located 69 kilometers northeast of the city of Segovia and takes its name from the monastery of Saint Jerome, which was founded there by Alfonso VI, King of Castile and León in 1064. History The town of San Jerónimo el Real began as part of the territories assigned by Alfonso VI to the monastery of Saint Jerome after its foundation. In the 14th century it was granted the title of Villa de San Jerónimo by Alfonso XI. Through the 16th century, the town developed a growing manufacturing sector for cloth and hemp. In 1767, it was declared a free and noble villa, becoming one of the most important towns in the region. During the 19th century, San Jerónimo el Real experienced a period of decline with the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the Civil War represented a dramatic setback. In 1940, the village’s population had sunk to only 720 inhabitants, but it has since recovered and the population currently stands at over 2000 people.
