Roskilde Cathedral is a catholic church located in the city of Roskilde, Denmark. It is the oldest Gothic cathedral in Scandinavia and the most important historic church in Denmark, serving as the burial site for 39 of the Danish monarchy. The cathedral was built between 1170 and 1260. The Cathedral was built in the Romanesque style, built of limestone brought from the island of Bornholm. During the 13th century, work was done to expand the cathedral's nave and choir areas. In the 15th century, the tower was built and later a mausoleum for the royal family was added. By the 16th century, the Cathedral was beginning to show its age and was in need of restoration. In 1687, an extensive restoration project was undertaken, and the Cathedral was given its present look.
