History:

St. Petersburg's Ostrovsky Square was created in 1862 when the city opened up to the wider world during the 'Great Reforms' of the mid-19th century. At the time, it was a small square, surrounded mainly by one-storey houses. It was home to humble workers and small businesses and was of little interest to anyone. Over the course of the 20th century, however, the area became a bustling centre of art and culture, eventually becoming the home of such world-renowned institutions as the Mariinsky Theatre and the Hermitage Theatre, as well as a range of galleries and museums. The Square has also played host to a variety of major events over the years, from mass meetings of workers during the Revolutionary period to the Great National Assembly of 1917. During Soviet rule, it was used as a space for parades and large public gatherings, such as Lenin's funeral procession. In the late 1950s, it was given an official name – Ostrovsky Square – in honour of the 19th-century Russian author Alexander Ostrovsky. In the 21st century, Ostrovsky Square remains a vibrant meeting point for locals and visitors alike. It is the site of many a street festival, featuring art, literature and music, and is home to a range of eateries, bars and clubs that cater to all tastes and budgets.
