Lyseng Church is a Lutheran Church located in Aarhus, Denmark. The church dates back to 1898, when it was founded by King Christian IX and is a unique example of Romanesque Revival architecture. The church is today, both a parish and a chapel, with its main claim to fame being as the site of the up until then largest crowd assembled, to hear Martin Luther give a sermon in 1525. About 11,500 people, who had travelled from throughout Denmark and beyond, gathered to hear him.
Lyseng Church features a blend of Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles. The bright yellow brickwork, the red-shuttered windows, and the rustic spire all combine to lend Lyseng Church a distinctive charm. Inside, the interior is crafted in a Neo-Gothic style, with ornate carvings, ceiling frescoes and intricate tilework adding an extra level of décor. It is a popular site for weddings and baptisms, as well as general worship services.
Lyseng Church is home to several notable artifacts, including a baptismal font from 1350 as well as a decorative font from 1750. It is also home to a painting of St. Elizabeth of Hungary, which was painted by Carl Henning Pedersen in 1953. The church also houses two 18th century organs, which are popularly used during special occasions.
In addition to its religious services, Lyseng Church provides education and youth activities, along with various special programs such as lectures, music, and special events. The church also sponsors several charitable organizations and is actively involved in the community.
