History:

The Kunsthal Charlottenborg was founded in 1754 as an art gallery and exhibition hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is located on the Neoklassicist site of the former Royal Danish Academy of Arts in the heart of Denmark’s capital. The origins of the Kunsthal Charlottenborg go back to a royal charter granted by King Christian VII in 1754 to establish a Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. In its beginning, this academy was to be based in the Neoclassical King’s Palace, now known as the Amalienborg. The building was built between 1735 and 1744, and Karl Friedrich Schinkel was among its first architects. However, the academy was not very successful, so the decision was made to move it farther away from the palace in 1844. The new site for the Royal Danish Academy of Arts was decided to be on the other side of Copenhagen’s harbor, in the area known as Vesterbro. The building was built between 1844 and 1848, and the Kunsthal Charlottenborg was first opened to the public in its current location on January 1, 1848. Initially, the Kunsthal Charlottenborg provided space for the exhibition and sale of Danish art, but over time it has expanded its range of activities. Today, the Kunsthal houses the annual Charlottenborg Exhibition, a series of contemporary art exhibitions organized by the Charlottenborg Fellowship.
