History:
Aarhus City Hall is a historic building located in Aarhus, Denmark. Built in 1942 in the Modernism style, it is one of the most distinctive and iconic buildings in the city. The City Hall was designed by renowned Danish architect Arne Jacobsen, who is known for creating Copenhagen Airport and a number of modernist residential buildings. The building was constructed on the newly-constructed Aarhus Harbour and is made up of a three-story block with curved facades facing towards the harbour, topped by a tower. When it was first opened, the City Hall was designed to house the administrative functions of the city, and the ground floor housed the Mayor’s office as well as the Council Chambers. During World War II, when the harbour was bombed by Allied forces, the City Hall was also damaged. However, it was quickly repaired, and today it is still in use by the municipal government of Aarhus. Since then, the building has also been opened to the public, with its interior becoming a popular tourist attraction with its artworks and sculptures. In 2008-09, the building underwent extensive renovations, and it was re-opened as a contemporary civic center. Today, the City Hall still functions as the seat of the City’s administrative functions, but also houses a café, an information center, and a tourist attraction with many of Jacobsen’s artworks. It serves as an important landmark in the city and is host to numerous municipal and cultural events. You must visit one of these historical places in Denmark on your Denmark tour
