History:

The Aarhus Botanical Gardens in Aarhus, Denmark have a long history starting in the city centre in 1830. The first botanic garden in Aarhus was laid out on an 8,000 m2 site next to the water tower on Vester Allé in 1831. The activity level from the entrance gate increased in the 1830s, with the opening of the Aarhus Theatre and the beginning of the city’s sporting activities, such as horse races.In 1866, the botanic garden was relocated to the old fortification ground outside the city. Here it remained relatively unchanged, while the city center changed and got more built up. In 1870, the botanic garden was enclosed with an iron fence and the trees and plants were better tended compared to the former spot at Vester Allé. Twenty years later, it was decided that the botanic garden needed to be moved once again to escape the smoke and noise of the advancing city infrastructure. In 1920, the garden was relocated to its current location in an area that was previously used for leisure activities. At its current location, the botanic garden had longer hours and proximity to the University of Aarhus, making it easier for students and members of the public to visit and appreciate the plants and trees. Since then, the botanic garden has changed dramatically and grown to its current size of over 14 hectares – one of the largest in Europe.
