Gréckokatolícka eparchia Košice (Greek Catholic Eparchy of Košice) is a Greek Catholic Church jurisdiction in Slovakia, covering the eastern part of the country. Its history dates to the late 15th century, when Roman Catholic immigrants from the Kingdom of Hungary established parishes in the area. Initially, the region's churches were placed under the jurisdiction of the local Roman Catholic diocese. In 1646, however, the local parishes were reorganized and placed under the jurisdiction of the Bishopric of Mukachevo in Ukraine. In 1692, the Bishopric of Mukachevo was united with the neighboring Eparchy of Uzhhorod, forming the Greek Catholic Eparchy of Mukachevo-Uzhhorod. This eparchy endured until 1876, when it was divided into two separate entities. As a result, the area covered by the original bishopric was divided between Mukachevo-Uzhhorod in the west and Košice (then called Kaschau) in the east. In 1895, the Eparchy of Košice was formally established. Over the course of the 20th century, it weathered a variety of hardships, including two world wars, Soviet occupation and the suppression of religion during the communist era. In 2005, the eparchy was reorganized, with a new bishop appointed and new parishes established. Today, the eparchy administers about 10 churches, primarily concentrated in the larger cities of the region. In addition to its regular religious services, the church provides a variety of programs and services to its members, including missionary trips throughout the region, adult education courses and youth activities.
