The first church on the site of St. James church is believed to have been constructed in the 11th century. Much of this is due to the patronage of a Prešov nobleman, known as Petrus of Presov. This original structure was most likely destroyed by the Tatar region in the late 13th century. The present Gothic-style structure was constructed sometime in the 14th century. It went through a period of renovation in the 19th century, with some of the old structures being replaced with newer architecture. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Slovakia.
