The church was constructed between the years 1243 and 1263 in the square style of late-Romanesque architecture. It was constructed as a defensive church to guard the castle of Trenčín and the town. The church was commissioned by the Hungarian King Béla IV who wanted to honor his son and later martyr, Stephen I. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Slovakia.
