St. Matthew's is a Church of Scotland. It was founded in 1811 and is located in the heart of Glasgow City. Its history is long and varied, having been a significant and integral site in the life of the city for more than two centuries. St. Matthew's is one of the longest-serving congregations in the nation, as Scotland's Protestantism has changed throughout time. Prior to the church, the site was known as St. Thomas A'Beckett Church, then later changed to St. Matthew's Church. In the 19th century, it added a spire and angled windows to its main structure. In 1893, caretaker John Burns helped restore the building to its original state. St. Matthew's has moved through several eras and has experienced many evacuations, refurbishments, and expansions over years. The church is well-known for its stained glass windows, Celtic crosses, and imposing spire, which can be seen by visitors to Glasgow from most angles. Today, St. Matthew's is recognized as a fully-functioning Christian church. It seeks to honor its past and recognize the many generations that have come before it through outreach projects and Sunday services. St. Matthew's offers a warm, inclusive atmosphere with worship and service activities that are open to all who wish to enter. The church values openness and inclusivity, meaning all visitors are welcome. Services include a range of activities, such as traditional Gaelic services, Christian weddings, and baptisms, as well as non-sectarian activities such as choirs and musicals for people of all ages.
