St. John's Church In Scotland is an historic Episcopal parish located in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands of Scotland. The church was founded in 1137 and is dedicated to St. John the Divine. Its history is closely linked to Orkney's rich Viking roots. The church is thought to be one of the oldest places of continuous Christian worship in Scotland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best churches in Scotland which you must visit.

History:

St John’s Church dates back to the late 12th century when it was dedicated to St John the Divine. The church was originally established as a Benedictine abbey and underwent renovation in the 12th and 13th centuries and again, although on a smaller scale, in the 19th century. It is likely that the name of the church was originally “The Church of St John the Evangelist”, but this was altered to “St John’s Church” during the Reformation. The church is uniquely located in the centre of the town, in a church square which is well kept and surrounded by ancient buildings. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.

St John’s Church is the longest-standing parish church in Scotland that still holds regular services, with the first recorded service being held in 1217. It is the ‘mother church’ of the Diocese of Orkney and features in many local stories and legends. The church is a Grade A listed building and a Scheduled Monument, and is also part of the World Heritage Site for the Heart of Neolithic Orkney. The church’s most unique feature is its unusual twin towers, which are thought to date from the 13th century, and are a sign of the town’s wealthy past.

Services on Sunday include a morning service in traditional language and a more informal Basis service in the evening. Weekly bible study and prayer groups are also held. Many activities are organised throughout the year including children’s Sunday school classes, youth events, and choir practice. Many of the services provide a service of commemoration for those who have passed away.
