History:

St John’s Church dates back to the late 12th century when it was dedicated to St John the Divine. The church was originally established as a Benedictine abbey and underwent renovation in the 12th and 13th centuries and again, although on a smaller scale, in the 19th century. It is likely that the name of the church was originally “The Church of St John the Evangelist”, but this was altered to “St John’s Church” during the Reformation. The church is uniquely located in the centre of the town, in a church square which is well kept and surrounded by ancient buildings.
