Balnakeil Church In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services

Balnakeil Church is an active Church of Scotland church located in the north-east of Scotland's Highland region, near the village of Crooked Bridge. Its roots date back to the 6th century when St. Olaf, the founder of the church, established a missionary outpost there. The parish was part of the Diocese of Caithness until 1693 when it became part of the Diocese of Sutherland. Today, Balnakeil Church is part of the United Reformed Church of Scotland, a collection of Presbyterian congregations. The Balnakeil Church building dates back to the 11th century, although most of the surviving stonework dates from the 16th century. The church is of a traditional Scottish style with a tall angular tower. Inside, the church has white walls and a hammered iron font. The main history of Balnakeil Church is rooted in the many Gaelic-speaking families and clans that have stayed near the church for centuries. In particular, the Clan Mackay held the church from the 14th to 16th centuries. In 1710, the Clan Mackay moved away from Balnakeil and it was taken over by the English-speaking community. The Parish Records for Balnakeil date back to 1695 and document the births, deaths, and marriages of those connected to the church. The Balnakeil Church has continued to provide services to its community over the centuries. These include christenings for infants, marriages of couples, and funerals for those who have passed away. Additionally, there are weekly Sunday services, children's and youth groups, adult Bible studies, and other special services throughout the year such as Easter and Christmas services.
