Innerpeffray Chapel In Scotland: History,Facts, & Services

Innerpeffray Chapel is a former chapel located in Crieff, Scotland, in the Strathearn area of Perth and Kinross. It is said to be the oldest free library in Scotland dedicated to the public. The Chapel has a history stretching back to at least 1580, when it was founded by Lord Drummond who owned the Innerpeffray Estate. The family founded the chapel to offer regular services to its tenants. It has been a site of religious worship ever since, and has been part of the Church of Scotland since the Reformation. The original chapel was replaced in 1759 by a new one which was built in a classical style by Robert Adam and his brother, John. This Chapel is now a listed building and is open to the public to visit. There are regular services and events held here, including concerts and lectures. The Innerpeffray Library was established in the Chapel in 1762 by David Drummond, 3rd Earl of Perth. The library started off with just two books and has since grown to around 10,000 volumes. It is open to the public and is a registered charity. The library has a wide selection of books covering many areas of interest including history, natural history, philosophy and religion. The Chapel is also home to an historic graveyard, a nature reserve and a small museum. The museum includes displays on geography and natural history, as well as historic documents and coins.
