In 1843, 433 ministers and 1,400 lay elders separated from the Church of Scotland in response to the Westminster Confession of Faith being declared devoid of essential meaning and the appointment of members of the Church of England to the General Assembly. These ministers and laymen signed a Deed of Demission and formed the Free Church of Scotland. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.
