Camelon Saint John's dates back to Medieval times and the Knights Templar and Knights Hospitaller had a presence in the village in the 12th and 13th centuries. The village was fortified in 1436 when King James II granted the lands of Lipshopher to Gavin Veitch, who built a stone wall round the village. Over the years the village has changed and evolved and it now has a diverse population, including a large ethnic minority presence. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Scotland.
