Brief History:
Masjid al-Mustaqeem is one of the oldest and most famous mosques in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is located in Al-Jamiah Alabsiyah Street in Jeddah’s Old Town and was built during the 9th century AH (15th century CE). The mosque was destroyed by the floods of 1740 and rebuilt during the 19th century by the Ibn Dahlan family. Today, Masjid al-Mustaqeem is considered to be one of the most important historical sites of the city. The mosque’s large white marble facade is decorated with beautiful arabesque designs and includes many beautiful supporting structures such as the minaret and residence of the imam. It is also known for its beautiful domes and Oriental style landscaping and contains the grave of the Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Amr ibn Al-Aas. Architecture:
Masjid al-Mustaqeem is the central mosque of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, located on King Abdulaziz Road near the ferry crossing in the city's center. The mosque was constructed between 1970 and 1977 and is notable for its distinct Ottoman architecture. The mosque is comprised of a small courtyard, three prayer halls, minarets, and a central dome. The courtyard is surrounded by a large stone wall and offers a place of respite for visitors and an area for sunbathers to escape from the city’s harsh desert sun. The three prayer halls are terraced, each with a popularized shape top and striking green tile roofing design. The main prayer hall has a spectacular golden dome that is formed by twelve fiberglass ribs. The dome rises to a height of forty-five meters and is supported by four thick stone columns. There are two minarets situated on the façade of the mosque. The interior of the mosque is made up of bright marbled floors and walls and is well-lit and beautifully decorated with intricate geometric designs and calligraphy. In the center of the mosque is the mihrab, or prayer niche, which is made of white marble and decorated with a crescent and stars inlaid in yellow marble. The mosque was designed by the Iranian architect, Nasser Hooshmand, whose use of Ottoman-style architecture was influenced by the Ottoman era in the Middle East. The Masjid al-Mustaqeem is a unique example of Ottoman-style architecture in Saudi Arabia and serves as an important pillar of cultural and religious heritage.
