Brief History:
: Masjid al-Ma'ali is located in the holy city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia adjacent to the Kaaba. This mosque is believed to have been built by Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib, the fourth Rightly-Guided Caliph of Islam and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). It is believed to have been built in 707 AD and is the site of the first Friday sermon that was ever delivered in Islam. The mosque is sometimes known as the Masjid al-Jamiyyah, or the Great Mosque of Mecca. The mosque has been reconstructed several times throughout history and was renovated again in 1864 by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Aziz. Masjid al-Ma'ali is the third holiest site in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is located at the summit of the Jabal al-Noor mountain, and is the highest masjid in the city. The trip from Mecca to the top of Jabal al-Noor takes approximately 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Mecca to the top of Jabal al-Noor. The fare is around 120 SAR.
