The Evangelical Lutheran Church Of England In England: History,Facts, & Services

The Evangelical Lutheran Church Of England (ELCE) is a confessional Lutheran church body in the UK and Ireland. It is an autonomous member church of the International Lutheran Council. It is a fellowship of Lutheran congregations that strives to uphold the truth of God's Word, the unaltered Augsburg Confession, and the two Sacraments of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion. The Church endeavors to promote unity among other Lutheran churches, to extend its teaching and help to those who seek it, and to provide pastoral care and support to its members. History The ELCE was founded in 1993 and is an outgrowth of the Lutheran Church of Great Britain and Ireland, which had been in existence since 1981. The founding members of the ELCE, who had previously been members of the LCGBI, wanted to create a church that would remain faithful to the Lutheran Confessional doctrine and practice. The ELCE was founded on the basis of Scripture, the unaltered Augsburg Confession, and other Lutheran Confessions as found in the Book of Concord. The ELCE is affiliated with the International Lutheran Council, an association of Lutheran church bodies which subscribe to the Trinitarian-Lutheran doctrine and practice. Facts • The ELCE is currently made up of 11 congregations located throughout the UK, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. • The ELCE is committed to a purer expression of the Lutheran confession, and as such it has adopted the unaltered Augsburg Confession and the Book of Concord as its statement of faith. • The ELCE is a member of the International Lutheran Council, a worldwide association of confessional Lutheran Church Bodies. • The ELCE is a liturgical Church, borrowing elements from the rich liturgical traditions of Lutheranism. • The ELCE is the only church body in the UK which is a member of the International Lutheran Council. Services The ELCE provides both public and private services for its members. The public services include regular Sunday worship services, Bible studies, youth activities, and evangelism. Private services include marriage counseling, confirmation instruction, bereavement counseling, and spiritual direction. The ELCE also operates a residential home in Limehouse, London, as a meeting venue for its members, and a publishing house for its publications. There is also a Lutheran seminary, the Lutheran Theological Institute, for those wishing to pursue further theological study.
