The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin in Russia is one of the most important cultural, political, and historical sites in Russia and the region. The fortress was founded in 1221 by Prince Yuri of the Suzdal Principality and served as the center of politics and power for two centuries. The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin has served as a dwelling for the nobility, a religious site with several churches and cathedrals, and a fortress throughout its history. In 1508, the city was granted the status of an outpost and was fortified following the appearance of Tatars in the region. It was periodically besieged and attacked, but it was reconstructed and improved by the government and Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich Romanov in 1611 and 1631. The Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin was involved in several major historic events and battles. In 1612, it played a role in the Russian Time of Troubles when it held off forces loyal to large pretender to the throne - False Dmitry and in 1645 and 1671 it was besieged by Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Romanov during the wars against Poland and Ukraine, respectively. Additionally, the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin served as a major center of trading and commerce throughout its history and even today it serves as the main administrative building in the city.
